1.) NOTES FROM John & Joyce
Welcome new members! Greetings, to the "old."
"Cherish the new friends and the old,
One is silver, the other gold."
OLD BUSINESS
(This is NEW and OLD.)
There is a brand new listserv available for amputees. We mentioned it in a previous newsletter but since that newsletter, AMP-L has converted to an automated listserv.
Here is the information provided by the list moderator, Wayne Renardson, with a tiny bit of editing to save space:
Welcome to the Open Forum for the discussion of amputee and related issues. This list will serve as a forum for the free exchange of ideas for amputees and interested others to discuss matters of mutual interest.
History:
This list was created in March 1996 by people who wanted a forum to express ideas relating to amputation. Subscribers will determine the content and topics suitable for discussion. Use of the delete key is recommended for any post found offensive or not to be of interest. Personal attacks are verboten.
The moderator is a RBK amputee (resulting from a motorcycle accident 1969.) Since that time he has taken an active interest in issues relating to amputation and hopes to participate in a forum that discusses the amputee experience from many different perspectives.
Technical information:
This mailing list runs from an HP Netserver LC running Novel Netware and Mercury Mail Transport System. The server is located in the Department of Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry at the University of Pittsburgh. Amp-L is a restricted, public, archived mailing list. Only members can submit messages to the list but membership is open to anyone. All messages are stored in an archive (space permitting).
Instructions:
To SEND A MESSAGE to the list, simply sent it to AMP-L@hoffman.mgen.pitt.edu and your message will be automatically relayed to everyone on the list (including yourself) as quickly as possible, sometime immediately. The exact time frame will vary, depending on the size of the list or how busy the internet is at the time of posting. Any message posted to the list from any subscriber will likewise be mailed to you.
If at any time you wish to be removed from the list, send a message to MAISER@hoffman.mgen.pitt.edu and make the first line of your message say:
UNSUBSCRIBE AMP-L
(do not include any other text.) You will receive confirmation nearly immediately that you have been removed from the list.
Some of you may be interested in receiving AMP-L in Digest form. This means rather than receiving messages as they are sent, one at a time, the listserv will hold all messages for a 24 hour period and send them to you in one fell swoop, once a day or every 24 hours.
If you prefer receiving messages this way, send email as follows:
To: MAISER@hoffman.mgen.pitt.edu
Subject: Blank (for AOL use a "." in the subject line)
In the body of the message write: SET AMP-L DIGESTTo turn off the digest command and resume receiving messages as they are sent, send the following in the body of the email:
SET AMP-L NODIGEST
Official Disclaimer and Netcop warning:
Many of the subscribers to this list belong to national BBSs (Compuserve, America Online,) and may have to pay to receive E-mail. Any message that is anywhere within the broad topic of amputees is welcome. However, please do not clutter the list with irrelevant messages or messages intended for only one person which effects others e-mail bills.
Please be considerate of others' opinions and beliefs. This mailing list has been created as a courtesy of the University of Pittsburgh Department of Molecular Genetics and Biochemistry and it will continue to flourish only as long as it is not abused.

NEW BUSINESS
It's been a busy week in cyberspace! Another new amputee related Web Page hits the Internet. While it is still "under construction" you might want to visit it now and see what's available at this time...then save it as a FAVORITE PLACE/or HOTLIST and return in the future. AAO&P welcomes your content comments. :)

2.) "LETTERS TO THE EDITOR"
The majority of the email this week has concerned our emergency last Monday night. Thank you all for your letters. They are very much appreciated and your shared personal experiences were another example of the bonding in the online community. We love y'all {{{hugs}}} and wish we could meet you all personally. :D
THE ADVICE (DISCLAIMER)
Please be sure to read the information at this link at least once.
4.) HINTS AND TIPS
TIPS
Upper extremity
Don't discard those "freebie" key rings (the ones that have a large plastic tab on them) given out at election time, etc. These can be installed on coat or handbag zippers and other common items, very easily, increasing the grasping surface.
Lower extremity
When your prosthetist installs a foam cover, ask him/her to save you a small piece to keep for and emergency repair. The "spare" piece can easily cut with scissors and placed in or over the tears that occur at the knee joint when you don't have time to make an appointment for a permanent repair.
**********DO NOT GLUE the
patch in!!
Instead, let the stocking hold it in place.
**********(Make sure your patch doesn't interfere with knee joint operation.)
Have a hint, tip, or suggestion? Please email us and we will consider it for use in the newsletter or chat room.
5.) QUOTE/THOUGHT FOR THE DAY
"The bosom can ache beneath diamond brooches; and
many a blithe heart dances under coarse wool."
