Amputee Newsletters Vol 1 #18

1.) NOTES FROM John & Joyce

Since this is the "Holiday Edition." We will be brief. [smile]

Holiday Greetings to one and ALL!

TRADE SHOW:

John recently attended a trade show, Alabama State Prosthetics and Orthotics Association.

I was fortunate enough to attend several lectures. These lectures covered new products, prosthetists concerns regarding proposed new legislation which could effect the quality of patient care, as well as general discussions about the industry. I was VERY impressed with all of the professionals attending. (I was the only non-professional.) Their primary concern was patient care and not the "bucks." I know that they were genuine in their interest for "patient care," the show was not intended for the public. I found it reassuring that all the people involved approached me for my opinion as an amputee. They really DO want to hear from "us."

Regarding New Products:

I saw a new super light weight, small, hydraulic knee, a water resistant knee, and an equivalent of a "Pelite" material.

New batteries for myo-electrics are scheduled to be released in the near future. These batteries contain a micro processor which allows for a very quick recharge, have no memory problems, and run longer per charge than existing batteries (that I am aware of.) Particularly interesting, was a battery that was approximately the same dimension as a 3.5 diskette yet thinner AND was completely flexible. (I was able to crinkle it in my hand and it still functioned.) These batteries however, require their own charging system and refitting of the electronics currently being used. (Imaging the wide variety of uses for a flexible battery--I for one, would love to get rid of the "battery bulge" on my forearm!)

I also noticed an orthotic product that was of the highest quality I have seen to date. The workmanship was excellent!

As the non professional "guinea pig" at the show, I demonstrated the proto-type for a new toe-lift ankle. Also, I took part in the demonstration of a socket fitting system, which I feel all prosthetists should have.

I returned home, more convinced than ever that amputees must organize and communicate with the health care providers, insurance carriers, and each other. If we don't, we will ALL lose...if we do come together, we can participate in changes that will not only help us, but future generations, too.

((I would like to thank Mike Curtis of World Wide Prosthetics Systems for inviting me to the show and making it possible for me to not only demonstrate his products but to preview and evaluate new devices offered by other companies. It is important for you to know, that while Mike and I have become good friends, he knows that I won't personally recommend anything I don't sample, or have confidence in its application. He wouldn't have it any other way either.--Thanks Mike.))

*** Please pay special note to the second letter in LETTERS TO THE EDITOR section. It is excerpted from personal email, but it suggests something you can do.

Dear John and Joyce,

(Regarding last weeks TIP)

There are jar openers that are circular rubber, often given out as promotional material (like floppy Frisbees. [grin]) Instead of using these at the top of the jar, use them as a base to keep jars (like mayonnaise, for example) from scooting all around the counter. This helps a lot for one handed jar opening and closing.

John: Have you seen the one-hand jar openers that fit under the kitchen cabinets.

They are a circular piece of plastic that screws under the cabinet overhang. Attached to the plastic are two saw-tooth blades mounted to form a V so that various size lids are accommodated. If one holds the jar in ones hand and presses the lid into the metal V, with a twist, the lid is loosened.

--R.

Editor's Note: Yes, the one handed jar opener work very well also. The flexi-rubber disks are great for traveling and can generally be obtain free. One uses downward pressure and the other upward/forward pressure. We thank R. for his tip! [smile]

John...

It was good talking with you last week. We need all the help we can get to spread the word about health care and related topics...I get rather animated when I discuss these matters!

There is a patient's rights act being proposed in the NJ State assembly. I have written to the sponsor of this bill. The bill is in response to the profit only motives of insurance companies without regard to consumer needs. I am also writing to my state senator concerning the "any willing provider" bill. HMO's and PPO's are eliminating competition by excluding small businesses. Many senior citizens in our area are being persuaded to join HMO's for their Medicare coverage. Our own government is contributing to the demise of small businesses!!! Again.....it was good talking with you......keep the faith!!!!!!

--R.B.

Editor's Note: This is why I feel it is imperative that we as amputees make sure our voices are heard, or we will end up with "one limb fits all." Check with your state law makers (you can get information on their names, addresses and phone numbers through your local library) and your prosthetist will probably have information, as well.

Also, if you are on AMERICA ONLINE you can go to keyword: WHITE HOUSE for a list of federal legislators with email address and other contact information. (In fact, you can email President Clinton and V.P. Al Gore from this forum.) If you don't have access to AOL, you may email me for a text file with this information.

Thanks R.B. for the information and an idea how we can all get involved.

4.) SPECIAL CLOSING

A VERY special "THANKS" to each and everyone of you for your support and comments, without you there would be no AMP U T CHAT. Your input and referrals have helped us reach out to so many others and hopefully accomplish our goal of "helping anyway we can."

Health, Wealth, and Happiness to you this Christmas and in the New Year and in all the New Years of your life!
